Dr. Gustav Preller
1875 – 1943
A prolific and popular South African historian
Gustav Preller’s interpretation of the 19th-century movement of Boers into the interior helped in the development of the concept of ‘The Great Trek’. Preller played an important role in planning the Voortrekker Monument. His varied writings on South African history helped in the achievement of the recognition of Afrikaans as an official language, which replaced Dutch in 1925. Preller popularized many Afrikaner cultural events by encouraging people to recall the past and re-enacting stories of the past in their own lives.
